If the word broccoli conjures up insipid, limp, greyish lumps boiled to within an inch of their lives, then you need to give this fantastic green another go.

Lightly steamed and tossed though well salted garlic butter, or coated with olive oil and paprika then roasted in the oven till just a little charred, broccoli’s flavour really sings. And for a healthy, warming bowl, lightly boil you broc in chicken stock with a clove or two of garlic, before blending to a smooth soup with some double cream and a good crack of black pepper.
